The Government has lauded St Giles Medical Rehabilitation Centre for its outstanding contributions to the development of healthcare services, especially in the rehabilitation of injured and sick persons, as the institution marks 60 years of dedicated service.
St Giles is an iconic institution and a medical centre dedicated to the rehabilitation of adults and children with all types of physical disabilities, providing physiotherapy, occupational therapy, hydrotherapy, speech therapy and psychology services to both adults and children.
Speaking during the 60th anniversary ceremony held in Harare yesterday, the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, said they greatly appreciate the centreโs contributions to the development of healthcare services in Zimbabwe, particularly in the rehabilitation of injured and sick persons.
In a speech read on his behalf by Deputy director for rehabilitation services in his Ministry Dr Khuzi Ncube, Minister Mombeshora said the Government, through the Ministry of Health and Child Care, provides monthly grants and training for health personnel, but these efforts alone are not enough.
โWe require support from corporates and donors to complement the Governmentโs work, as we are witnessing today.โ
He also reiterated Governmentโs commitment to supporting individuals with all types of physical disabilities.
โThe Government of Zimbabwe is committed to supporting persons with injuries, diseases, physical, mental, and social impairments, ensuring they achieve their maximum possible functional independence and enjoy equal rights and opportunities in their communities.
โI am happy to learn that St Giles is in the process of setting up a Mental Health Clinic and admission facility to rehabilitate individuals struggling with substance and drug abuse.
โWe all recognise that mental health problems, especially those related to drug and substance abuse, have become a national crisis, particularly affecting the younger generation.โ
St Giles board chairperson, Commissioner Nancy Matshe, said: โFor 60 years, we have remained steadfast in our mission to ensure that every patient who walks through our doors receives the support and care they need to regain their independence and lead fulfilling lives.
โThe Centre has continued to diversify its operations in line with the services offered, for example the expansion of the mobility aids section.โ
Platinum mining giant, Mimosa Mining Company officials were also present and were commended for their continued support, which has enabled St Giles to expand its services and reach more people in need.
In a speech read on his behalf, Mimosa managing director Mr Fungai Makoni said: โThis celebration reminds us of the profound and lasting impact that St Giles has had on the lives of countless individuals, their families, and the broader community.
โOver six decades, St Giles has been a sanctuary for rehabilitation, providing essential services to those who need it most. The centreโs commitment to offering care and support for individuals recovering from injuries and living with disabilities is a testament to the values of compassion, dignity and excellence that it upholds.โ
Mimosa, Mr Makoni said, has been heavily involved in community development programmes within its area of operation and at the national level, implementing well-defined programmes with significant impact.
St Gilesโ history dates back to the 1950s where a group of mothers with children living with disabilities due to polio used to have monthly parties to entertain their children which they termed Sunflower parties.
It was then built using funds from door-to-door collections made by these mothers who raised ยฃ14 000 to build the complex.
