Plumtree 7s Women’s tourney a success

AFTER having watched people of Matabeleland South being starved of women’s rugby action for times without number, the province’s Women’s Rugby representative Catherine Shurugwi says the inaugural tournament they held last Friday at Plumtree High School was a big success.

It was a meet that saw Montrose, Bulldogs, Plumtree Queens, Highlanders Ladies, Faith Christian College, Plumtree High School and Entumbane Club lock horns.

Shurugwi said they were grateful for the support they got from a number of stakeholders from the Plumtree community.

“The tournament was a success because of the support from Alan Redfern staff, Plumtree High school staff and the Phakamani High School staff. They have always had a passion for rugby.

They have always worked tirelessly in pushing for success when it comes to rugby. We want to thank everyone for the support, we say thank you to the Plumtree community for allowing their children to take part in the tournament,” said Shurugwi.

She added: ““It was also a way of getting people of Plumtree and beyond to accept rugby, and to enjoy this great game that has a huge following in many parts of the world.

“The tournament was staged at the perfect time as it also helped us to celebrate Women’s Month. If I remember well, there has never been a ladies rugby tournament in Matabeleland South,” said Shurugwi.

Highlanders emerged as the tournament’s winners after getting the better of Plumtree Queens on a 19-0 scoreline to walk away with a floating trophy.
