Outdoor movie nights return with a modern twist

WITH the soaring hot weather conditions, finding time to have fun seems impossible, especially if it involves being indoors. That is why many people have now embraced a new yet very old idea of enjoying their free time  which is having outdoor movie nights.

While the concept is very old and dates back to yesteryear when it was popularly known as bioskops, people have now made it more classy and romantic.

As the name suggests, outdoor movie nights involve watching films under the open sky.

While some might choose to do it alone, others prefer the company of friends, family and even total strangers.

Just like an indoor movie night, snacks like popcorn and drinks are a definite must for this outing.

The difference between watching a movie outside and indoors is that outdoors, one gets to enjoy the fresh air, gaze at the stars — and who knows, some might be lucky enough to see shooting stars.

Saturday Chronicle spoke to Mobile Cinema, a team organising an outdoor movie night for Bulawayo. The organisers said the idea of an outdoor movie cinema has always stemmed from a desire to combine the magic of film with the beauty of nature.

“Watching movies under the stars creates an enchanting atmosphere that is simply unmatched. It’s not just about the film; it’s about the entire experience — the fresh air, the sound of nature, and the chatter from fellow movie lovers.

“We are going to set up a large inflatable screen in a spacious outdoor area, along with comfortable seating options like blankets, bean bags and even lounge chairs,” said Nicole Sibanda, one of the organisers.

She said that while outdoor movie nights are a great concept, they are aware of some reservations people might have such as the weather getting cold, mosquitoes, and the possibility of rain.

“That is why we have put in place a few measures like outdoor heaters and mosquito repellents. We even have a tent on standby in case it rains,” said Nicole.
