ZIMBABWE international Tawanda Maswanhise was engrossed in a moment of individual brilliance when he scored a fantastic goal for Motherwell in the Scottish league at the weekend.
Maswanhise, who had earlier provided an assist for the team’s opener against giants Glasgow Rangers, doubled the lead with a well-taken shot that caught the attention of the media and fans alike.
His team, Motherwell, said the 35th-minute strike was “a goal made of imagination, skill, and execution.”
The 22-year-old showed great composure when he controlled the ball inside the box and turned before smashing a shot into the bottom right corner.
Joshua Barrie, editor at Rangers Review, was among the many journalists that were impressed, and he commented, “Maswanhise’s touch and turn is excellent.”
Sky Sports described the goal as a “stunner,” an “incredible finish,” and “a piece of brilliance.”
The Sun newspaper said, “Magic Maswanhise scored a stunning individual goal.” This was Maswanhise’s fourth goal this season. He also now has three assists to his name after assisting Apostolos Stamatelopoulos for Motherwell’s opening goal.
With the goals, they had appeared on course for a first league win against Rangers at Fir Park since Boxing Day 2002, but they gave away two second-half goals to finish the match 2-2.
According to reports, BBC Scotland’s pundit Stephen Craigan (ex-Motherwell player and former Northern Ireland international) seemed to lose his cool as he commentated on Maswanhise’s goal against Rangers.
As Zimbabwean striker Maswanhise plucked a cross out of the air, Craigan interrupted host Richard Gordon on Open All Mics, shouting, “Hit it, hit it, hit it. It’s in! Haha! It’s 2-0. Maswanhise, what a piece of skill.
“It’s helped onto him; he scoops it around. I think it’s Tavernier or Sterling; he just cuts inside with the inside of his right foot and puts it in the bottom corner. What a piece of brilliance.”
Rangers fought back in the second half, with Moroccan Hicham Igamane scoring twice to tie the game.
But Maswanhise stayed sharp, causing problems for the Rangers defence with his skill and energy.
His brilliant performance helped Motherwell secure an important point and proved why he is regarded as a rising star in Scottish football.
His countrymen Marvelous Nakamba, Andy Rinomhota, and Jordan Zemura were also in action on Sunday. Zemura started in Udinese’s 2-2 draw with Torino in the Italian Serie A.
The versatile left back featured for 71 minutes as he made his 16th appearance in the 18 games played by his team this season.
Andy Rinomhota started in Cardiff City’s 2-1 win over Watford in the English Championship.
Nakamba returned to action in the 1-2 defeat to Swansea. The Zimbabwe skipper, who has been battling the effects of a long-term injury recently, played 65 minutes.
He has been a benchwarmer in the team’s previous four assignments.
Defender Brendan Galloway played 68 minutes in Plymouth Argyle’s 0-2 away defeat to Oxford in the English Championship.
Forward Tawanda Chirewa, who has just returned from injury, was given a run in the last 17 minutes of Derby County’s 0-1 defeat to Leeds.
