A TRAGIC accident in Kwekwe’s central business district claimed the life of a four-year-old boy and left his father with a fractured leg.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Tuesday at the Senderayi Roundabout.

He said Vitalis Mpofu (35) of Crossroads Business Centre in Silobela and his son, Tinotenda Gonese (4), were standing at the roundabout waiting for a haulage truck to pass so they could cross the road.

“Unfortunately, the rear right wheels of the truck’s trailer encroached on where they were standing and ran over them,” said Insp Mahoko.

The young boy was crushed on the head and died instantly, while his father sustained a fractured leg and was rushed to Kwekwe District Hospital for treatment. The truck driver failed to stop after the accident.

“We are appealing to members of the public who have information that can assist in identifying and locating the driver and the truck to report to any police station,” said Insp Mahoko.

In an unrelated incident, a 21-year-old man was fatally stabbed in a revenge attack at Zvibhawabhawa Business Centre in Zhombe on Monday night.

Inspector Mahoko confirmed the fatal stabbing of Lloyd Zhakata of Joseph Village under Chief Ntabeni.

“On December 30, at around 9pm, Tichaona Sibanda (22) of Manhamo Village approached Zhakata while he was drinking beer at Zvibhawabhawa Business Centre. Sibanda accused Zhakata’s younger brother of assaulting his sibling, Custo Sibanda,” he said.

Sibanda allegedly produced a Colombian knife from his pocket and stabbed Zhakata in the chest. Zhakata attempted to flee but collapsed and died on the spot.

Police are appealing for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect.

“As police, we are urging members of the public with any information regarding these two incidents to come forward and assist in ensuring justice is served,” said Insp Mahoko.
