AS Zimbabwe strives to eradicate AIDS by 2030, Action for Youth Foundation Trust is playing a pivotal role in supporting the country’s most vulnerable populations.
The Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has made significant strides in empowering young people, particularly those living with HIV, orphans, vulnerable children, and youth in key population communities across Zimbabwe.
Last year, the foundation reached over 450 young people in Manicaland, providing them with comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights programmes.
The initiative incorporates HIV self-testing, allowing young people to test for HIV in the privacy of their own homes.
Furthermore, the initiative provides access to family planning methods and education on HIV secondary disclosure.
Head of programmes at Action for Youth Foundation Trust, Ms Chido Tsakatsa said the organisation is dedicated to empower more young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to safeguard themselves against HIV.
“We believe that empowering young people with the right knowledge and skills is essential in the fight against HIV. By focusing on education, health, and economic opportunities, we are equipping the next generation to live healthier, more fulfilling lives,” she said.
The MGO’s programme director, Ms Lisa Katuruza said the programme equips youths living with HIV alongside their partners, ensuring better health outcomes, reducing stigma and promoting transparency in relationships.
“Many young people living with HIV face stigma and isolation, but through education and skill-building, we are helping them open up about their status and protect both themselves and their partners,” she said.
The executive director, Mr Marvin Musekiwa said Action for Youth Foundation Trust is urging young people in Manicaland to take ownership of their reproductive health and well-being.
“The highest rate of unwanted pregnancies, new HIV infections, sexually transmitted infections are high due to non-use of condoms; so we are encouraging young people to take responsibility in fighting against sexually transmitted diseases,” he said.
