THE Mayor’s Cheer Fund Challenge football tournament, which will feature eight teams, including champions Sumba Bhora and ambitious newboys Scottland, has been tentatively set for February 21,22 and 23.

Organisers announced yesterday that the three-day tourney will feature Simba Bhora, Scottland, CAPS United, Dynamos, Herentals, Yadah, MWOS and Harare City. CAPS United have just signed Zimbabwe international midfielder Kundai Benyu in one of the biggest off-season signings.

City of Harare spokesperson, Stanley Gama, said they were working hard to ensure that the tournament will be a grand tourney which will provide fans with the chance to get a glimpse of the strength of their clubs this season.

The proceeds will go to charity. It’s going to be a unique tournament which will serve as a season-opener to gauge the teams’ preparedness for the upcoming season.

“More importantly, the Mayor Cllr Jacob Mafume, through his Cheer Fund, wants to raise money for the needy.

“Besides the football, we will have a business exhibition around the venue, Rufaro Stadium, where companies will occupy stands to market their products.

“In the stadium, we will have entertainment from musicians and popular DJs in the country.

“So, the talent on display will not only be about football but other disciplines like music.

“We want to make it a massive family gathering,” said Gama, who is also chairing the organising committee.

He said the invitation sent to MWOS, who are based in Norton and Simba Bhora, who are based in Shamva, was meant to spice the occasion.

“Details of the tournament will be shared throughout until the tournament starts,” said Gama.
