HERENTALS president Innocent Benza says he has enough on his plate and will not raise his hand in the race for the Premier Soccer League chairmanship.
After deciding against running for the ZIFA presidency in Saturday’s elections, Benza has been linked with the PSL post, which could have guaranteed him a chair on the ZIFA board.
However, he said he was not interested in the PSL chairmanship.
“Look, my plate is already full. I have many responsibilities on my shoulders. I am a Member of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee for sport, a Member of Parliament for Mutasa Central Constituency and also the Herentals president.
“I think that’s enough and I can’t be seen to be chasing after another huge post in the administration of football as I am also a player for a team that plays in the PSL.
“When we talk of Herentals, we are talking about something very big. I think we are the biggest institution by numbers when it comes to professional football.
“We have the PSL team, the Herentals Queens in the Women’s Soccer League, a First Division side in the NRSL, another one in Victoria Falls, eight Division 2 teams in Mutasa, Harare (two), Chinhoyi, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Gweru, Bulawayo and Ruwa.
“We also have another girls’ team playing in the First Division based in Kwekwe. Then we have more than 20 000 students, both girls and boys who are part of the Herentals Academy.
“If you look at it, that means we have 14 professional teams and one of the biggest academies around. I am the president of all that so I can’t be that greedy and say I want to run for the PSL chairmanship.
“I have heard rumours and machinations linking me to that post (PSL chairmanship) but I am saying, no I have enough in terms of responsibilities.”
Benza is backing his son Tafadzwa, who is the Herentals chairman, to land a spot as an executive member of the association.
Herentals Queens CEO Loveness Mukura is eyeing the ZIFA vice-presidency for the slot reserved for women.
