A 39-year-old inmate at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison has had 15 years added to his prison term after he was convicted of indecently assaulting a fellow inmate.
According to a statement issued by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, Brian Shereni was convicted by the Harare Magistrates’ Court.
The court heard that Shereni sexually assaulted a 36-year-old inmate who was asleep.
Evidence presented in court, including semen, corroborated the victim’s testimony, leading to Shereni’s conviction.
The incident was reported to the cell staff and later to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services authorities, who filed a report with the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe has welcomed the conviction, saying it sends a strong message that such crimes will not be tolerated.
This is not Shereni’s first brush with the law. He was imprisoned for 20 years for rape after being released on an amnesty for another rape case.
