Although all projections point to a victory of the Republican Presidential candidate, Donald Trump, especially in three out of seven crucial swing states, it could be sometime before the final detailed results are announced.
Results are declared state-by-state, and Zimpapers Digital will keep you updated as new information comes out. The winner of the election will be sworn in as president after an inauguration on Monday, 20 January 2025.
But before that, every valid vote has to be included in the final results, and then a process known as the Electoral College ensues.
There are varying numbers of electoral college votes in each state that are up for grabs. It is obtaining these, and not just the support of voters themselves, that ultimately wins the presidency.
How does the Electoral College work?
States award all of their Electoral College votes to whoever wins the popular vote, and this is confirmed after meetings on 17 December.
The new US Congress then meets on January 6, 2025, to count the Electoral College votes and confirm the new president.
After the 2020 election, Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, refused to concede and rallied supporters to march on the US Capital as Congress was meeting to certify Joe Bidenโs victory.
