A befitting send-off for Pathisa Nyathi

Good morning and welcome to our coverage of decorated historian, filmmaker and writer, Pathisa Nyathi’s burial at Lady Stanley.
Nyathi died on Saturday at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo after a long illness, he was 73.
The stage has been decorated to depict a rural home and the coffin is covered with a cowhide, a combination that is delivering a strong cultural and heritage punch for the late Nyathi for the last time.
His family has taken time to pay attention to detail in appreciation of Nyathi’s legacy.
Nyathi, who was a widower at the time of his death, is survived by three children.

Mr Obert Chamisa, a representative of Pathisa Nyathi’s in-laws, is now on the podium. He said he is happy to see a huge turnout at the Bulawayo Amphitheater which shows how a lovable and respected personality the late historian was.

Pathisa Nyathi was a loving cultural man: Son Butho

The late Nyathi’s son Mr Butho Nyathi has asked his sisters Sikhanyisile and Fikile to join him on the podium.

Butho says his father could have projected himself as a tough cultural man but he was in fact a loving man who cherished nurturing his children.

He says he worked with his father at the Amagugu Cultural Centre in Matopo for seven years, a period that was the best working stage of his life.

His children have described their father as a funny and loving man who cherished his family.

On the podium now is Nyathi’s friend Mr Nicholas Siziba who says they met in 1976 when the late historian was a science teacher at Loreto Secondary School in Silobela.
He says he was amazed at how much Nyathi loved history and culture even though he was a science teacher.

THE late historian and author Pathisa Nyathi was laid to rest at the Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo on Wednesday afternoon.

He was 73.

Nyathi passed away last Saturday after a long illness.

He was a highly respected author who wrote over 70 publications and was survived by three children – Sikhanyisile, Butholezwe and Fikile.

His wife Elizabeth passed away in 2016.

A funeral service was held at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre and was attended by hundreds of mourners, among them Bulawayo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Judith Ncube, Bulawayo Mayor Councillor David Coltart, Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Reverend Paul Damasane and traditional chiefs, among other dignitaries.

Reverend Damasane said the late Nyathi wrote 20 books that articulated the history of the liberation war against minority rule from the British colonisers, the highest number of publications authored by any writer in Zimbabwe.

The daughter of the late revered nationalist Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, Mrs Thandiwe Nkomo Ibrahim, described Nyathi as a researcher par excellence who played a significant role in researching the history around the Pupu Battle of National Resistance against British colonialism.

When the Joshua Mqabuko Foundation was established in 2004, the late Nyathi was tasked with researching the life of the late Father Zimbabwe.
