A vendor is nursing injuries at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo after he was smashed with a brick, kicked and punched before he was robbed of cash and a pack of mopani worms locally known as amacimbi.
The victim, whose identity is being withheld, was attacked while he was just leaving Mambo Beer Garden in Tshabalala suburb heading to his home.
A relative of the victim said while the victim was walking home one of the seven robbers instructed him to stop but he refused.
โSoon after that he ran for his dear life, and they pursued him. They caught up with him and smashed his head with a brick. He fell to the ground before they slapped and kicked him. He passed out as a result of the attack. They then took his pack of mopani worms and US$35 and left,โ said the relative.
He regained consciousness later and reported the incident at Tshabalala Police Station.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident.
โWe would like to discourage members of the public from walking during the night. It is wiser to board a commuter omnibus or a taxi rather than to risk life,โ he said.
