ONE of the top food manufacturing companies in the country, Hutano Foods, has taken an initiative of promoting healthy lifestyles through targeting dry areas communities and using indigenous ingredients to produce healthy food.

In an interview at their stand at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) the company’s sales and marketing representative Charlene Chisvo said their aim was to promote the use of natural ingredients to make scrumptious food and create employment for people in dry areas.

“We thought that if we are able to create products that are healthy then people can make healthier life choices that are affordable.

“We are also helping people from very dry places who have a wide range of natural resources.  This was after we noticed that people want to eat healthy food but when you go to the supermarket the food that is labelled healthy is expensive,” said Chisvo.

Hutano Foods has a wide range of products that includes cereals, nuts, herbal tea, tissue oil and porridge that harness the power of local Zimbabwean ingredients.

“We have breakfast cereals that we make using (rough pigweed) imbuya, Indian juju (masawu) and baobab powder. We also have biscuits which contain Amarula nuts.

“We also have herbal teas like zumbani, resurrection bush, moringa and makoni. There is also a range of popcorn made from sorghum and we have dressed them with different flavours that are favourable to the youth,” said Chisvo.

Chisvo said they hoped to see their products growing and being sold both nationally and regionally.

“I hope to see our brand growing and being sold in different markets and we would like to see young people celebrating our Zimbabwean products,” she said.
