HEALTH experts, recovering drug addicts and law enforcement authorities will get a once in a lifetime opportunity to sit in the same room and share ideas on how to tackle the scourge of drug and substance abuse that is rampant in the City of Kings.
It’s not every day that law enforcement authorities get the chance to sit with drug addicts or those recovering from drug abuse under the same roof and share notes on how the use of illegal substances is wreaking havoc in society.
The two parties are usually embroiled in cat and mouse games over the use of drugs with the police hot on the heels of drug abusers.
The meeting, which is two years in the making, will see doctors, psychologists, recovering addicts and detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) narcotics division find ways to stop the scourge of drug abuse in the city.
The meeting will be facilitated by Arcadia Community Healthcare and Institutional Legacy Development Trust together with Youth Network Connect, an organisation based in Harare, at the Academy of Music in Bulawayo on 25 February.
In an interview with B-Metro, Billy Jassat, co-coordinator of Drug Free Zimbabwe, said the seminar took two years to plan and they were happy that the hard work put into the meeting was finally bearing fruit.
“We have seen an increase of drug and illegal substance abuse since the national lockdown in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and our aim is to engage the youths and make them understand the effects of drug abuse. Drugs can cause a lot of damage and youths must know that,” said Jassat.
“We urge the people of Bulawayo to come in large numbers as we learn and assist each other to stop the use of drugs,” he said.
The campaign will run under the theme: ‘Drug Free Zimbabwe at war with drugs’.
