A 62-YEAR-OLD man from Entumbane suburb in Bulawayo went berserk and assaulted his wife following a misunderstanding over a cellphone charger.
James Zikhali appeared before Western Commonage court magistrate Shepherd Mjanja facing a charge of physical abuse as defined in Section 3 (1) (a) as read with Section 4 (1) of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5:16.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four months imprisonment. Two months of the sentence were suspended for three years on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining two months were further suspended on condition that he completes 70 hours of community service at Western Commonage Court.
When the magistrate asked him why he committed the offence Zikhali said he did it out of anger.
The court heard that on 15 March and at around 8pm, Zikhali and his wife Zenzo Moyo (55) went to bed and there was no electricity.
At around 9pm, when electricity was restored, Zikhali woke his wife up and asked her about his cellphone charger.
His wife told him that she had not seen it.
That, however, didnโt go down well with Zikhali who went berserk and started insulting his wife.
He went on to slap her on the right cheek while accusing her of disrespecting him.
He also violently pushed her against the wall.
The matter was later reported to the police leading to Zikhaliโs arrest.
