Zandimaz speaks against abuse

SOUTH Africa-based Zimbabwean double platinum selling producer Zandile Mazithulela, better known as Dj Zandimaz, is not a happy woman!
In this month of March, where the mantra if “you empower a woman, you empower the whole village,” is being deservedly preached to foster the much-needed gender equality and inclusivity in society, DJ Zandimaz has bemoaned that certain spheres are still being closed for the fairer sex with the masculine society being dominant in the arts industry.

As if that was not enough, she also cited exploitation and abuse of women in the industry.
“Taking it from the ancient times, women have been undermined and excluded, yet men have been given the first preferences. It is disheartening to see women empowerment organisations and campaigns taking action, but still, women are still not given equal platforms and opportunities in the arts industry as compared to men.

“There is emotional abuse in the arts industry, it may extend to sexual assault. The strong ones remain unharmed but their careers will be jeopardised. Some, if not most, who make it to the top, may have compromised a lot,” opined DJ Zandimaz.

She added: “In fear of losing their careers, some women do not voice out their concerns, and they end up losing their souls and confidence. Women in this industry and outside, need to be educated and empowered on such issues so that they may understand their rights and stand their ground.”

The Emathandweni hitmaker also underscored that women who have been abused or are facing threats in the industry should speak out.
“Manipulation and deceit are everywhere. Women should gather courage and speak out in order to help themselves and the next woman facing a similar challenge,” she said.

Dj Zandimaz, who hails from Esigodini, has shared the stage with South Africa’s celebrated Afro-pop music duo Mafikizolo, Dj Maphorisa, Busiswa, and Young Stunna among other artistEs of repute.

At the 2021 Roil Bulawayo Arts Award (BAA), Dj Zandimaz’s song titled For Me was named Song Of the Year.

Apart from her prowess on the decks, Dj Zandimaz is also a holder of a Bachelor of Law Degree from University of South Africa (Unisa).
On Wednesday, Zimbabwe joined the world to commemorate the International Women’s Day all in an effort to observe cultural, political and socioeconomic women-made achievements in various fields.

Women’s Day also marks a call for a gender-equal world that is free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination and is diverse, equitable, and inclusive while differences are valued and celebrated.
