Zim, SA options for Mahachi, says his agent

RENOWNED player representative Gibson Mahachi has said they are now weighing local and South African options for Warriors midfielder Kudakwashe Mahachi who has been keeping fit at Mzansi’s DStv Premiership side Maritzburg United.

With hordes of football followers thinking that the ginger haired footballer was certainly going to put pen to paper at United, that has not been the case.

“He has been training at Maritzburg United just to keep fit. We are frantically working on getting a deal for him so that he finds a club where he can start from. As I’m speaking to you now, we are weighing options for him in both Zimbabwe and South Africa,” said Gibson in an interview from London.

He is on record saying with Mahachi being a free agent, the former Bantu Rovers, Chicken Inn, Highlanders and Supersport United diminutive midfielder, was not hard pressed to sign for a new club.

Fondly known as Nkembe, the Mzilikazi-bred speedy footie star, who is endowed with good ball control, visionary play and ability to score crucial goals, looks set to start over his career after he was recently acquitted of the attempted murder charges on his four-year-old son.

With South Africa’s DStv Maritzburg United emerging as his likely destination, his handler said the Zimbabwe international’s regaining of full fitness should take precedence before he commits to any club.

“For a fact, it was his own choice to keep fit Maritzburg United. He has been training with the club for some weeks now and I can’t say he will certainly join the Pietermaritzburg based club. He is still a long way off to regaining his fitness.

“While he has been out of the game for so long, it is interesting to note that a number of offers have come his way. A number of South African clubs and local teams have been inquiring about his availability but he is a free agent, meaning we have all the time in the world to make a decision before he can join a new club. There is no need to hurry or press any panic buttons because time is on the player’s side,” said Gibson.

Kudakwashe recently watched from the stands when Maritzburg United, who previously provided home to ex Warriors forward Cuthbert Malajila, former Highlanders striker Gabriel Nyoni and Chicken Inn’s Clive Augusto, suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of TS Galaxy at their home ground.

South Africa’s top flight league transfer window is set to close at the end of January and Nkembe, who was also heavily linked with a return to former Zimbabwean champions Chicken Inn and whose contract with Supersport United expired on 30 June, is still eligible to sign for any club in the Super Diski.

Two months ago, the ginger haired football star, who was then still making a series of court appearances, openly said he believed his legs couldstill carry him.

“It has been a challenging time for me. I have been on the sidelines for too long but I still believe my legs can still carry me. It takes courage but I admit things have never been the same for me,” said the 29-year-old Nkembe who has also previously turned out for Mamelodi Sundowns, Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates in South Africa.

At the time of his departure at Supersport, the Zimbabwe international was reportedly on the radar of an unnamed United Arab Emirates (UAE) side.
