THE start of the 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season generated immense excitement and anticipation among Zimbabwean football fans, fuelled by the return of two of the country’s most talented and exciting players — Khama Billiat and Kuda Mahachi. Both players had proudly represented Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup of Nations and were poised for redemption in the local league, with their careers seemingly having hit rock bottom.
At the pinnacle of his career, Billiat was a creative force to be reckoned with in the attacking third, boasting exceptional vision, skill and goal-scoring ability that could unlock even the most resolute defences. As an attacking midfielder, Billiat expertly controlled the tempo of the game, delivered precise passes and created scoring opportunities for his teammates.
Mahachi was an unstoppable force on the wing, capable of terrorising opposing defenders and creating chaos in the attacking third. He was, without a doubt, every defender’s worst nightmare.
Following the expiry of his contract with South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in June 2023, Billiat eventually signed with Yadah Stars. Though the move was initially met with scepticism, it proved to be a masterstroke, as Billiat enjoyed a remarkable season, scoring 13 goals and contributing to 24 overall goal involvements. His impressive form earned him a nomination for the 2024 Soccer Star of the Year award, and he finished as the second runner-up on the Soccer Stars Calendar. Furthermore, he made a successful return to the national team set-up.
Billiat’s success with Yadah Stars was proof of his unwavering hard work and dedication. Defying his 34 years, he showed no signs of slowing down and his invaluable experience and skill greatly benefited the team. His performances also caught the attention of other teams and he has now joined Scottland FC on a free transfer.
In stark contrast, Mahachi’s return to the local league has been marred by struggles. He has been reduced to playing a few cameo roles. Mahachi, who joined Manica Diamonds on a two-year contract, has found it challenging to regain his best form. He has not even scored a goal in frustration. The 30-year-old attacker had a lucrative contract with SuperSport United in South Africa but lost it due to personal issues. He then signed with Medeama SC in Ghana but was released due to fitness struggles.
Mahachi’s struggles to regain his fitness and form have been a concern for fans and coaches alike.
Despite his impressive pedigree, having played for top South African teams like Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows, Mahachi has failed to make a significant impact on the pitch.
His second stint in the local premiership, having previously played for Bantu Rovers, Chicken Inn and Highlanders, has been underwhelming, and he will need to work hard to regain his confidence and form.
However, Manica Diamonds coach Jairos Tapera remains optimistic about Mahachi’s prospects.
“Kuda is a talented player, and we believe in him. He’s had a tough time regaining his fitness but we’re working closely with him to get him back to his best. We are confident that he will come good and make a significant impact on the pitch. Remember, he missed last season’s pre-season, but we will have him with us this time around, and we’ll see how it goes. As far as I’m concerned, he is in my team and plans unless he decides otherwise,” said Tapera.
The contrasting fortunes of Billiat and Mahachi serve as a reminder of the challenges and uncertainties inherent in football. While Billiat’s resurgence is due to his hard work and dedication, Mahachi’s struggles highlight the difficulties of adapting to a new environment and recapturing past form.
As the 2025 season kicks off, all eyes will be on Mahachi to see if he can turn his fortunes around. Will he be able to rediscover his mojo and become a dominant force in the local league once again? Only time will tell.
