Gwanda Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund expands to year-round initiative

THE Gwanda Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund has introduced a year-round initiative to support underprivileged community members, aiming to ensure consistent resource mobilisation beyond the festive season.
Traditionally focused on bringing cheer to vulnerable groups during the holiday period, the programme has widened its scope this year to encourage a sustained culture of giving. The fund targets contributions in cash, groceries, clothing, and other essentials, to benefit over 250 individuals, an increase from last year’s target of 150. Donations will be distributed on December 21.

During the fund’s launch, Gwanda mayor Alderman Thulani Moyo highlighted the importance of extending the initiative throughout the year to maximise its impact. He said creating a culture of generosity can help transform the lives of many in need.
“Christmas is a time to be festive and merry, but unfortunately, some cannot enjoy this period due to financial hardships. We must work together as stakeholders in Gwanda to bring cheer to our community,” he said.

”The fund seeks to support orphans, widows, the elderly, and people with disabilities. I urge everyone to join in the spirit of giving.”
This year’s fundraising target has been set at US$20 000, significantly higher than last year, reflecting the increasing demand for social welfare support. Containers for donations have been placed in shops across Gwanda to encourage contributions.

Alderman Moyo said stakeholders, including councillors, churches, and the Department of Social Welfare, will collaborate to ensure a transparent selection process for beneficiaries. He stressed the importance of collective responsibility, urging businesses, residents, and other stakeholders to participate.
“The need for social welfare support is great in our communities. We will continue to knock on doors and ask for partnerships in fundraising efforts. Everyone has a role to play, no matter how small their contribution might seem,” he said.

Gwanda Residents Association Chairperson, Mr Collet Moyo, echoed the mayor’s sentiments and urged residents to take ownership of the initiative.
“This programme has changed lives, and for it to succeed, every resident must assume responsibility and play their part,” he said. Mr Moyo said efforts are being made to engage a wider network of supporters.
“People often think donations are only for business players, but every member of the community can contribute in ways that have a significant impact,” he said.

Mr Moyo said the expanded Cheer Fund is a demonstration of the power of community-driven initiatives, with its impact set to extend well beyond the festive season.
