CHRISTMAS will come early for jazz enthusiasts in Bulawayo as an impressive line-up of artistes is set to grace the stage at Kings Kraal on December 19.
Featuring a star-studded ensemble from Bulawayo and Harare, including Tanga wekwaSando, Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana, Tariro NeGitare, Thandy Dhlana-Jele, Jeys Marabini, Mehluli “Taz” Mhlanga, and Gog’ Bekezela, the event promises an unforgettable night of soulful melodies. The gig, fittingly dubbed the “Jazz Festival”, will be hosted by the charismatic Morris Touch.
In an interview with Chronicle Showbiz, organiser Mehluli “Taz” Mhlanga was enthusiastic about the upcoming event.
“Preparations for the gig are going well, and we anticipate a great time with these different artistes from various eras,” Taz said.
“It all comes full circle, especially with some of us having been mentored by legends such as Tanga wekwaSando. Unlike conventional gigs, ours will be very intimate and interactive, allowing the audience to suggest songs they want to hear.”
For the ever-bubbly Katomeni-Mbofana, performing in Bulawayo feels like a homecoming.
“I love Bulawayo and I’m very excited to be performing in the City of Kings and Queens,” she shared.
“I used to perform here back in the day, and it’s like coming for a holiday, not for work. I’ve been working on new material and will hopefully share some of it on the night.”
Veteran crooner Tanga wekwaSando, known for his hit Wake, echoed similar sentiments.
“We’re busy rehearsing with my band, and this gig is special to me since I haven’t played in Bulawayo for a long time. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with my fans and showcasing my new album, Tanga Gore naTanga Triple Play. Bulawayo must be geared to jam with us,” he said.
Tariro NeGitare, a proud Bulawayo denizen, was excited to be performing alongside such a diverse group of artistes.
“Imagine performing alongside these legends! That on its own is thrilling. I can’t wait to hit the stage,” she enthused.
The recent decline of jazz in the region has not gone unnoticed, as this festival aims to breathe new life into the genre. With a blend of seasoned performers and fresh talent, the “Jazz Festival” is poised to reignite the passion for jazz music in Zimbabwe. — @MbuleloMpofu
