DR Faith Mutete (36), a visionary leader in the country’s mining sector, has been honoured among the 100 most inspirational women in mining globally at the prestigious Women in Mining 100 Global Inspiration Awards held recently in Mayfair, London in the United Kingdom.
The awards, organised by International Women in Mining (IWiM), celebrate ground-breaking achievements by women driving change in the traditionally male-dominated industry.
Hailing from Mberengwa, Midlands Province, Dr Mutete is the founder and leader of Women in Mining Zimbabwe (WIM Zimbabwe), a national organisation dedicated to empowering women in the mining sector.
Her recognition comes as a result of her tireless efforts in advancing gender equality, sustainability and economic empowerment for women miners.
Her journey is a story of resilience and determination, from starting as an artisanal small-scale miner in Mberengwa to becoming a global advocate for women in mining.
Under her leadership, WIM Zimbabwe has transformed the way women miners operate, shifting perceptions from subsistence mining to mining as a viable business.
Dr Mutete has fought systemic barriers that hinder women in the mining sector, such as gender-based violence, limited access to resources and financing and challenges in acquiring mining licences.
She has spearheaded mentorship programmes, education initiatives and policy advocacy, ensuring that women miners have the tools and support to thrive.
Beyond economic empowerment, Dr Mutete has championed workplace wellness programmes in the mining sector, addressing high tuberculosis and HIV rates among miners and integration of essential health services in mining communities
She owns mines in Kwekwe and Mberengwa, employing 24 workers and has made health and safety a top priority for miners. Dr Mutete is also a leading voice for environmental sustainability.
She has implemented land reclamation projects, tree-planting initiatives and sustainable mining practices that balance economic growth with environmental conservation.
Dr Mutete expressed gratitude for the award, describing it as a validation of the struggles women miners face.
“It’s a recognition of the resilience and perseverance that come with being in this field. As a small-scale miner, I have faced numerous challenges, from limited resources to operating in environments where women are often overlooked,” she said.
“This award highlights the strength it takes to carve out space in an industry dominated by men, and it validates the hard work and determination needed to thrive in such a setting.”
Despite resource constraints, Dr Mutete remains committed to sustainable and responsible mining, and she believes this global recognition is a win for all women in mining.
“This recognition is not just for me but for every woman miner who has dared to dream, break barriers and persevere despite the challenges. It validates our work and inspires us to continue building a more inclusive and sustainable industry,” she said.
