Music plays a crucial role in the lives of teenagers, serving as a powerful means of expression and connection. Just like Justin Bieber turned his passion for singing into a global career, many young artists dream of making their mark in the industry.
Among them is Chantelle Mukarakate, known as Chantelle 263—a determined girl next door with a deep love for music. Chantelle grew up in a family that valued music.
From an early age, she sang in her home church alongside her mother and brothers. “Music has always been my escape and my voice,” she explains.
Her influences include iconic artists like Miriam Makeba and Whitney Houston, as well as contemporary stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé.
“Each of them has inspired me in different ways,” she adds.
At just 16, Chantelle gained national attention by participating in Season 11 of the Star-Bright competition. “I did not just want to perform; I wanted everyone to see my potential,” she recalls.
Her talent quickly captivated both the audience and the judges, propelling her into the spotlight.
As a contemporary fusion artist, Chantelle blends genres like afro-pop, Amapiano, dancehall, and gospel with traditional Zimbabwean rhythms. Her music celebrates her cultural roots while appealing to a diverse audience. “I aim to create songs that reflect who I am and where I come from,” she says.
Her current single, “Musikana Akanaka,” produced by Maselo Girl, carries a strong message of empowerment for young women.
“It is about recognising your worth and embracing who you are,” she asserts.
“Another track, “Wakanyanya,” produced by DJ Levelz, explores themes of love and connection, showcasing her versatility as an artist.
Chantelle says her major challenge is gaining recognition, especially on social media.
“Building a following feel like climbing a mountain,” she admits. However, her passion for music keeps her motivated to share her message of self-acceptance and independence. “Every girl should know she is capable of greatness,” she emphasises.
Her parents have been instrumental in her journey. “They have supported me since day one,” she acknowledges.
Their encouragement has been crucial in helping her pursue her dreams. “They always remind me to stay true to myself,” she adds, highlighting their unwavering support.
Chantelle also looks up to local artists like Janet Manyowa and the late Chiwoniso Maraire, who inspire her to incorporate traditional sounds into her music. “They show me how to blend the old with the new,” she explains, reflecting on the importance of her cultural heritage.
With aspirations to collaborate with artists like Poptain, whom she admires for his creativity, Chantelle envisions a future filled with musical opportunities.
“I want to create something special,” she says, excited about what lies ahead.
As she navigates the music industry, Chantelle remains grounded, grateful for her family’s support. “I would not be where I am without them,” she reflects.
Chantelle is more than just a rising star; she is a voice for young women everywhere.
Through her music, she aims to uplift and inspire, reminding listeners that they can overcome challenges and pursue their dreams. “Be yourself and avoid peer pressure,” she advises.
