Gweru family loses US$11k worth of property to robbers

Midlands Bureau

A family in Gweru lost over US$11 000 worth of property to a gang of six men who invaded their home in Harben Park suburb on Sunday.

Midlands Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, reported that the robbery occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, around 12:20am, when Mary Chakamanga (60) and her 24-year-old son were asleep in separate rooms.

The gang initially attempted to break in through the door but eventually succeeded by breaking a window.

“The gang demanded cash, and Ms Chakamanga handed over $500 while calling for help,” he said.

The gang managed to enter the house, ransacked it, and stole $200 in cash from a handbag, as well as multiple electronic devices, including, four cell phones, an iPad, a Huawei tablet, an HP laptop and various groceries.

During the assault, Ms Chakamanga was reportedly attacked with an iron rod as the intruders demanded more cash.

They also confiscated the keys to a silver Toyota Rav4 (registration number ADG 9795) parked outside, loaded their loot into the vehicle, and drove away.

The following morning, the stolen vehicle was found abandoned along a dirt road near Go Beer Farm in Northlea, Gweru, with the car battery missing. Insp Mahoko said the total value of stolen items is estimated at $11,980 and called for anyone with information to assist in the investigation by approaching any police station.
