Garments manufacturer, Paramount Archer has donated 370 pairs of fire-resistant gloves to the City of Harare’s fire department.
The donation came as an appreciation after the fire department successfully extinguished the fire that razed their warehouse.
Handing over the gloves to Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume, Paramount group finance director Mr Jeremy Youmans said although they lost a three-storey building in the process, their factory was saved, which has enabled them to keep going.
“Today, we are handing over a donation to the Mayor on behalf of the Fire Brigade,” he said.
“These gloves are made in Bulawayo from genuine leather. They are heat-resistant gloves and if you watch anybody fighting a fire, you will see how important it is to have gloves because a fireperson needs their hands to search or feel where they are going. Covering and protecting the hands from fire is very important.
“We cannot thank you enough for the efforts that were made.”
Mayor Mafume said the fire department is critical.
“The most crucial part of any city is its ability to respond to disasters, whether natural, artificial or otherwise,” he said.
“If that is not adequately covered, it can create a lot of disturbances in the economy of the city and the country at large.
“There is need to be able to react to these disasters in a way that protects life, assets, property, and the ability for them to continue.”
“We created a disaster committee in council to focus on the disasters that occur,” he said.
“In this season there is flooding, there are accidents, there are also infectious disease-related cases. This is why we have a health committee and a disaster committee.
“In many cases what follows flooding are diseases like cholera, typhoid, and other opportunistic diseases.”
