Herentals in final title push

Tadious Manyepo-Zimpapers Sports Hub

HERENTALS Queens will move to within a point of winning the Women’s Soccer League for the third year running if they manage to collect the full points against fourth-placed Correctional Queens at Mkushi Sports Club today.

The pacesetters need four points from the final two games of the absorbing race to seal the title and return to the CAF Women’s Champions League.

They lead second-placed Black Rhinos Queens by three points going into the dead end of what has been a rollercoaster marathon where all the big three including Chapungu Queens have taken turns to lead the race.

Third-placed Chapungu, who are four points behind Herentals had their title ambitions literally killed when they lost 1-0 to Correctional on Wednesday.

And both the Air Force of Zimbabwe team and Black Rhinos will be hoping the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services team will stop Vagoni Vebasa today.

But Simba Dedza and his girls don’t seem to be in a compromising mood heading into arguably the game of the week against Correctional.

The reverse tie at Wagadhugu ended in a goalless draw with Herentals striker Maudy Mafuruse missing a penalty.

“I am certainly confident that my girls will do well and we will take a further step towards the Promised Land with a win against Correctional Queens.

“It is a game that we all know will be very difficult to win given what Correctional Queens can give,” said Dedza.

“But we know what we want and we definitely have the means to attain it.

“It will be a tough one, but we are well prepared for it. A draw can also take us closer, but a victory will take us even closer so we need to go for the latter.”

With relegated Hope Academy last on their season meal, Herentals Queens know the game against Correctional will most likely decide their fate.

Across town in Waterfalls, Black Rhinos face Harare City while Chapungu who can still mathematically win the championship host Hope Academy at Manyame Air Base.

All matches kick-off at 11am.
