Ming Chang speaks on violence

Herald Reporter

MING Chang Sino-Africa Mining Investments, a company operating in the Midlands Province, has explained developments surrounding an incident which occurred at its premises where a worker and his supervisors violently clashed.

In a statement, the company reported that Kholwani Dube, an excavator operator at Bijou Farm, was suspended for allegedly ignoring safety instructions from supervisors.

The company said Dubeโ€™s actions escalated into a violent confrontation, resulting in a manager being injured and hospitalised.

Reports indicate that after receiving warnings, Dube stole keys to an excavator and recklessly drove it towards supervisors Mr Hu and Mr Chen, endangering their safety.

In an attempt to regain control, Farm Manager Mr Liu Haifeng fired a warning shot into the air to disperse the chaos.

Reads the statement: โ€œIn accordance with company policies and Zimbabwean labour laws, Mr Dube was warned and subsequently suspended from his duties pending a formal investigation into the matter.

โ€œDube even attempted to run over the manager Liu Haifeng with the excavator, all this while putting other employees and assets at risk.

โ€œLiu Haifeng fired a warning shot into the sky, taking into account all firearm handling and safety procedures and without harming anyone.

โ€œThe two were embroiled in a fistfight which five other employees broke up. It was during the fistfight that Dube stabbed and seriously injured Liu Haifeng on his left leg. Fellow employees disarmed Dube.โ€

The company added that Mr Liu was taken to hospital for medical treatment, while other employees took the driver to the police.
