The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Extraordinary Summit on the security situation in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), initially scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed to Friday, January 31.
In a statement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Professor Amon Murwira confirmed the postponement citing logistical adjustments as the main reason.
The Summit is going to focus on the eastern DRC problem.
“As you know, there are negative developments in the east of the DRC, a lot of violence and conflict and you would remember that His Excellency hosted another Summit on this matter to extend the bloc’s mission in DRC.
“Now the Extraordinary Summit is for Heads of State and Government to debate and make decisions on the peace efforts for Eastern DRC,” Minister Murwira said.
“We are expecting Heads of State and Government from all SADC countries to come for this Summit on Friday. We are in full throttle preparing for this Summit.
“His Excellency has set the date as Chairperson of SADC and the issue to be discussed is on our mission to restore peace and tranquillity in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
Minister Murwira said any instability in SADC is an affront to the region’s economic development efforts.
“Therefore, the regional leaders will be given the extent of the problem on Friday and they will be able to make decisions on this,” he said.
“You would remember that His Excellency, Dr ED Mnangagwa issued his statement on Monday condemning violence and actually urging SADC to take action. So SADC is taking action. That is why there is a Summit on Friday.
“Everything is set for the meeting and we look forward to the resolution of problems in the Eastern part of the DRC. The leaders will be arriving at different times but definitely they will meet on Friday.”
The Extraordinary Summit follows President Mnangagwa’s recent statement reaffirming SADC’s commitment to peace and security in the region.
