The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is set to hold an Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government to deliberate on the deteriorating security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade spokesperson, Mr Levi Mugejo confirmed the development.
“We are fervently making preparations for the meeting,” said Mr Mugejo.
He said the ministry will release a statement later today.
The SADC region has expressed concern after the rebel group, M23, captured the city of Goma. The rebels also attacked the United Nations peacekeepers and SAMIDRC forces but were repelled.
SADC chairperson, President Mnangagwa on Monday condemned the act of aggression by the M23 saying such action undermined the sovereign, territorial integrity and the peace and security of the DRC and the entire SADC region.
In a statement, President Mnangagwa said as chairman, he condemns unreservedly the cowardly attacks on the UN and SADC peacekeepers that have resulted in them paying the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of peace in eastern DRC.
