PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has hailed various individuals and organisations for their contributions to the liberation struggle that led to Zimbabwe’s independence and the country’s development.

The Zanu PF First Secretary made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by Zanu PF Politburo member Cde Charles Tawengwa at a ceremony to confer Liberation Empowerment awards to individuals and organisations who were adjudged to have contributed immensely to the liberation of the country and sustenance of the Third Chimurenga.

The ceremony, held in Harare on Saturday, was organised by Legacy TV, a broadcasting channel meant to reflect developmental issues being championed by the Second Republic.

In his keynote address, President Mnangagwa said the awards sought to honour individuals who dedicated their lives to upholding and advancing the legacy of the liberation struggle.

The event also celebrated the country’s First Chimurenga icon Mbuya Nehanda Nyakasikana and Sekuru Chaminuka, a legendary spirit medium that resisted the colonisation of Zimbabwe by the British South Africa Company in the 1890s.

“The legacy awards are a critical part of honouring and preserving the legacy of the liberation struggle. By recognising the achievements of those who have made a difference, we remind ourselves of the struggles and sacrifices that were made in the fight for freedom,” said the President.

“These awards also serve as an inspiration to future generations, encouraging them to continue the work of building a strong and vibrant nation.”

President Mnangagwa noted the deep influence that each of the award recipients had on their communities, families, and sectors.

“Their legacies serve as a powerful reminder that our actions, decisions, and achievements have the potential to inspire and shape the lives of those who come after us,” said President Mnangagwa.

“Amongst the categories is the Nehanda Nyakasikana Leadership Excellency Award which was established to honour the legacy of Mbuya Nehanda, a legendary spirit medium and leader of the First Chimurenga, the liberation struggle against the invaders, the British South African Company. An icon of female strength and courage, representing the power and potential of women in society.

“We also celebrate the legacy of Induna Matshe whose legacy is that of unwavering loyalty, courage and integrity. He was the first Ndebele emissary of King Lobengula sent to England and his loyalty to his King was never in question, despite being offered bribes.”

President Mnangagwa said the legacy of Chaminuka will be cherished and remembered. Chaminuka was recognised for his courage, determination, vision, and prophetic abilities, particularly his remarkable foresight regarding the arrival of white people.

Some of those that were conferred with awards include Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Cde Ezra Chadzamira, who was honoured for being consistent.

Receiving the award on his behalf was Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Secretary Dr Edmore Pazvakavambwa, who said the award challenges the province to make sure that Vision 2030 becomes a reality by 2028.

“The award challenges the province to take proactive measures in ensuring that Vision 2030 becomes a reality by 2028. This ambitious vision aims to transform the nation into an upper middle-income economy, and the province is tasked with spearheading initiatives that drive economic growth, innovation, and social development,” he said.

“The award serves as both a recognition of past achievements and an impetus for the province to accelerate its efforts in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure.”

Other award winners included Vapostori and MaZion for ED leader Madzibaba Moses Gwarisa who was also honoured with the Joshua Nkomo Patriotic legacy award.

The award highlighted the significant role individuals who did not take part in the liberation struggle, have played in the nation’s development process.

Over the years, Madzibaba Moses has initiated several empowerment programmes that have provided numerous individuals with funding to start their own businesses.

Speaking after receiving the award, Madzibaba Moses said it was an honour to be recognised for the sterling work of supporting the revolutionary party.

“God has blessed us through Legacy TV which has recognised us fully by acknowledging our role in uniting and mobilising support for President Mnangagwa and Zanu PF during the past elections. Vapostori and Zanu PF are one. We are indigenous churches which will continue to work for unity and with the ruling party,” he said.

Among those recognised at the awards ceremony were Tourism and Hospitality Industry Deputy Minister Tongai Mnangagwa, Founder and president of Concord for Young Women in Business Global Cde Apphia Musavengana, and Vapostori and Zion for ED spokesperson Madzibaba Obey Mapuranga.
