Chitungwiza residents are up in arms with their local authority for failing to consult them on its latest move to demolish pre-cast concrete walls built without council approval.
Further, the council said those who are not within their boundaries should revert back to original pegs or risk being penalised.
In a statement, acting town clerk Japson Nemuseso said the town is inviting homeowners and businesses with pre-cast walls that have not been approved to visit council offices for regularisation.
“Please also note that those who are not within their boundaries should revert back to original pegs. The council is waiving the US$200 penalty fee for each approval stage to people who respond to this call before 28 February 2025.
“Those who respond before the deadline will only pay a US$150 approval fee. If compliance is not achieved within a month, the municipality will not hesitate to demolish the durawalls (pre-cast walls), a cost that will be met by their owners,” he said.
Mr Nemuseso said the notice was issued in terms of the Regional, Town and Country Planning Act (Chapter 29: 12) Section-24 and the Roads Act (Chapter 13: 18) Section 46 (2).
Chitungwiza Residents Trust (Chitrest) director Ms Alice Kuvheya said the council priorities are misplaced.
“The council doesn’t know where their priorities are, now they are prioritising pre-cast walls, instead of houses, we have sewer flowing in our houses for months which is not attended to, workers are not being paid.
“They never consulted us, we only woke up to a social media notice,” she said.
