Zimbabwe launches second satellite

Zimbabwean scientists, led by coordinator Dr Painos Gweme are in Vostochny Cosmodrone, Russia, where the country’s second earth observation satellite, ZimSat-2, is set to be launched.

All spacecraft systems are working normally ahead of the launch and the scientists anticipate the first elementary data a few hours after the launch.

With a planned operational lifespan of five years ZimSat-2 will be used to:

• enhance agricultural exploration and planning
• mineral exploration
• wildlife conservation
• disease surveillance
• infrastructure mapping
• provide essential climate analysis

Zimbabwe’s first satellite, ZimSat-1, was launched at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia, United States, as part of the BIRDS-5 constellation.

 
The Satelite has launched Now

The Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA) confirms that ZimSat-1 is fully operational, with downlink and uplink functions stabilised.

The ZimSat-2 project is the result of a joint research collaboration between the Zimbabwe National Geo-Spatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA) and Southwest State University (SWSU) in Kursk, Russia.
