EDITORIAL : Doek & slay: Women hit back

YESTERDAY we reported that the amazing success of the final Doek & Slay show on Sunday, which attracted about 23 000 women at Alex Sports Club, has sparked an online rift between some men and women.

We reported that a vociferous section of men has been blasting the gatherings, which are gaining momentum with each passing show, and attracting a loyal base across the entire nation.

We reported that Sundayโ€™s event, the final one this year, attracted women from Mutare, Masvingo, Bulawayo, Gweru and even Victoria Falls.

Some of the women proudly displayed their hometowns on placards.

It now appears there is competition among the women themselves to ensure that the next show held in Harare is bigger than the last one.

One of the women said she came from Zvishavane specifically for the show and itโ€™s something she used to see in our religious circles when people would come from all over the country to Harare at the height of the frenzy generated by some of our prophets.

She said the women feel they have a stake in it because it is about them โ€“ their joy, their friendship and themselves, in a world of their own, without men.

However, we have noted that all this appears to be causing some problems with some men attacking the women online for choosing to have fun, in such large numbers, on their own.

Men have been arguing that the event is not for decent ladies while women argued that it was jealous men who were unhappy to realise that women can find joy even among themselves.

However, the women have been hitting back.

One of them said only the narcissistic and insecure men are the ones who are being threatened by womenโ€™s independence and autonomy.

She said confident, self-assured men were not intimidated by their partnerโ€™s desire for female friendships or a day out with the girls.

Another woman said they now needed the 90,000 seater FNB Stadium in Johannesburg because they have the numbers and the passion to even feel that mega venue.

Our view at H-Metro is that all this bickering between men and women is not necessary.

The reality is that we have not heard any stories about wild behaviour and anything being done at such parties for some men to condemn all the women who attend these parties.

It appears there is order and the women behave in a way that is exemplary and are all focussed on having fun and nothing more and nothing less.

We have seen some decent women attending these parties and the Deputy Sports Minister, Emily Jesaya, was part of the crowd at the latest show in Harare on Sunday.

Even if letโ€™s say 20 women behaved badly on Sunday, we canโ€™t use that to suggest that it represents 23 000 other women who behaved very well that day.

Letโ€™s celebrate this concept and even improve it because it is uniting the women and giving them a good platform to have their fun on their own.
