FANS laid into David Raya on social media after his woeful performance for Arsenal in their penalty shootout against Man United.
The Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw for 120 minutes by the 10-man visitors, and lost 5-3 on penalties to Ruben Amorim’s side.
Raya guessed wrong for every single United spot kick, but was particularly ridiculed for his antics when Leny Yoro stepped up to take the Red Devils’ third penalty.
He was seen shuffling to the right side of the goal, hopping as Yoro approached the ball, and fully committed to the wrong corner as United’s centre back slotted the ball into the bottom left.
One user wrote on X: ‘This up there with the worst goalkeeping I’ve ever seen.’
Another said: ‘Nearly every one of [Raya’s] attempted saves looked like something out of a comic book. Awful.’
A third wrote: ‘Down earlier than Southampton,’ aiming a jibe at the Saints, who are deep in a relegation battle, 10 points from safety.
The game erupted into life after the interval with United as Bruno Fernandes put the visitors into the lead before United’s momentum was halted when Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second booking. Arsenal then promptly found an equaliser through a deflected volley from Gabriel.
The Gunners then had a golden opportunity to take the lead after being awarded a penalty but Altay Bayindir produced a fine stop to deny Martin Odegaard from 12 yards.
After a tense extra 30 minutes the game was decided by spot kicks, with a miss from Kai Havertz sending Ruben Amorim’s side through.
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he could not be prouder of his players despite crashing out of the FA Cup to 10-man Manchester United on penalties on Sunday.
The Gunners enjoyed a man advantage for over an hour after Diogo Dalot was booked twice early in the second half.
Bruno Fernandes had fired United in front but Arsenal levelled within seconds of Dalot’s departure through Gabriel Magalhaes.
However, a familiar lack of killer instinct in front of goal cost Arteta’s men as another chance to end a five-year trophy drought slipped by.
Martin Odegaard saw a penalty saved by Altay Bayindir before Kai Havertz and Declan Rice missed huge chances to win the tie in 90 minutes.
After a goalless 30 minutes of extra time, Havertz was the only player who failed to score in the shootout as United’s reserve goalkeeper Bayindir made another splendid save.
“It was unbelievable,” said Arteta. “(Based on) the performance we deserved to win the game by a mile, but the reality is that we are out and the only thing we will be judged on is that.” — SuperSport/Daily Mail.
