PROFESSOR MLAMBO, PROPHET MAGAYA’S DOCTORATE SAGA

H-Metro Reporters

UNISA’s announcement yesterday that Prophet Walter Magaya is not a recipient of an honorary doctorate from the university has thrown the spotlight on one of South Africa’s leading clerics − Professor Solomon Mlambo.

Amid a flurry of questions, related to the controversy, the shadow of Professor Mlambo, a South African cleric who is the head of the Mount Zion Bible School and is also a guest speaker on Soweto TV, loomed large in all this drama.

Images released in 2017 showed Prophet Magaya and his family celebrating the conferment of the ‘honorary doctorate’ with a UNISA banner in the background.

That image also featured Professor Mlambo, who appears to have played a very big role in the process which ended with Prophet Magaya being conferred with the ‘honorary doctorate’, which is now the subject of a lot of controversy.

In an interview with our sister newspaper, The Herald, back then, Prophet Magaya also mentioned receiving a letter from Professor Mlambo.

“Each year, Professor Mlambo, with the School of Theology and who is the head of Mount Zion Bible School (interdenominational), awards deserving candidates selected across South Africa and other countries with honorary Doctorate degree to recognise the good work they do in their community,” the letter said.

He said after he received that letter, a team from UNISA discreetly came to Zimbabwe.

“They knew about the farming venture and wanted to see it first hand. Being a man of God and doing farming at the same time amazed them. They also considered the number of people I employ,” he said.

Prophet Magaya said they also looked at donations he made not only in Zimbabwe but in other countries like Botswana, South Africa , Swaziland , Zambia, South Africa, Portugal and the UK. However, yesterday, the UNISA media affairs department released a statement yesterday in which it said the honorary doctorate conferred on Prophet Magaya in South Africa in 2017, did not come from the institution.

In their statement, UNISA said:

“Based on the information provided, the system of the university could not find any record showing that Mr Magaya was ever registered or graduated with UNISA.

“This means that Unisa does not have Mr Magaya as a student or a graduate. Any certificate he may present claiming to be from Unisa is fraudulent.

“UNISA has never conferred any honorary doctorate upon Mr Magaya.

“We strongly condemn this false assertion.

“We believe that conduct of this nature damages and brings our brand into disrepute, and we reserve the right to take appropriate corrective action.”
