From next year all public universities and colleges must establish viable physical companies to support the production and commercial activities developed under the heritage-based Education 5.0 doctrine, Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister Fredrick Shava told the graduation ceremony at Nyadire Teachers’ College in Mutoko recently.

The doctrine was propelling innovation and industrialisation, aligning with the goals of Vision 2030 and in the next phase the higher education institutions needed to push the commercialisation of their programmes forward with President Mnangagwa declaring 2025 as the Year of Commercialisation.

During the ceremony 183 students received diplomas in education. The event was themed: “Developing innovative teachers through participatory initiatives for an industrialised society.” Dr Shava was represented by Deputy Minister Simelisizwe Sibanda.

“The overarching theme resonates deeply with the holistic approach of Education 5.0, aimed at developing teachers capable of driving innovation and contributing to Zimbabwe’s industrial growth,” said Minister Shava.

He cited the inauguration of the fruit juice and water processing plant at Mutare Teachers’ College as a tangible example of how educational initiatives can lead to economic advancement. That factory not only created employment opportunities in local communities but also highlighted the role of education in fostering community prosperity.

He assured attendees that the Government, under President Mnangagwa’s leadership, had allocated funds to support the commercial initiatives, including the graduate employment creation and development programme and the integrated skills expansion outreach programme.

Through these programmes, the ministry aims to create a supportive legal and financial infrastructure for graduates to establish their own industries.

Notable developments include Mkoba Teachers’ College constructing Gangarahwe High School and Morgan Zintec College advancing the Batanayi Primary School project.

Minister Shava highlighted that over 5 312 youths and community members have benefited from outreach programme, which focuses on imparting practical skills for holistic socio-economic development.

He reiterated the Government’s commitment to inclusive employment creation, ensuring that no one is left behind.

To further support students from vulnerable communities, the Ministry has introduced the “Work for Fees” initiative.

This programme provides students with opportunities for meaningful work within their institutions to help cover tuition costs.

“By blending work experience with academic learning, we alleviate financial burdens while instilling a sense of responsibility and work ethic,” said Minister Shava.

He urged Nyadire Teachers’ College graduates to use their skills to advance innovation and shape Zimbabwe’s future.

“You are the torch-bearers of Vision 2030. Equipped with critical thinking, creativity, and leadership abilities, your education has prepared you to be innovative and entrepreneurial. Your role in shaping the future of our nation is paramount, and we trust you will rise to the occasion with diligence and dedication.”
