WHEN he stunned the entertainment industry by becoming one of the youngest DJs to win the national Carling Black Label DJ Competition in Bulawayo in 2023, many doubted he would achieve another national accolade.
However, defying expectations, he continued to push the boundaries of his craft.
Mutare-based DJ Irvinix is now basking in the glory of being voted the winner in the Best in Creativity Category at the 2024 Carling Black Label DJ competition held during the last week of December last year.
He took home a prize of $500.
He participated in the competition as the defending champion.
The fiercely contested event saw DJ Joe winning the overall title, while DJs Tino and Lindsay were named first and second runners-up, respectively.
What began as a surprise victory soon blossomed into a promising career, proving that his initial triumph was merely the starting point for greater accomplishments. As his reputation swelled, so did his fan base, expanding beyond local circles and catching the attention of influential industry figures.
He received invitations to perform at high-profile events nationwide, where his electrifying sets stole the show.
His tireless work ethic, paired with an innate ability to connect with his audience, solidified his position as a force to reckon with in the entertainment scene.
It became evident that his talent was no fleeting phenomenon. He was a rising star destined to stay, continually elevating the standards for young DJs in Zimbabwe’s competitive music landscape.
At just 21, Zviko Maponga, aka DJ Irvinix, has defied expectations.
The talented spinner from Zimta Park suburb revealed to Weekender Entertainment that his passion for disc jockeying remains unwavering, driving him to become Zimbabwe’s top disc spinner.
Hailed as one of Mutare’s most exceptional DJs, Maponga’s humility and soft-spoken nature belie his impressive skills on the turntables. With effortless flair, he blends diverse genres, showcasing mastery over contemporary and new school sounds.
His versatility has cemented his position as a standout talent in the ever-evolving music scene.
“I am still learning, and there is more to achieve,” said the shy DJ.
“I need guidance and mentorship. Competing against new talent was invaluable experience. Being recognised as one of the best is humbling and encouraging. I am focused on honing my scratching skills and wordplay.”
In the world of disc jockeying, wordplay refers to the creative manipulation of words, sounds, or phrases to elevate the performance and captivate the audience. With dedication and perseverance, DJ Irvinix is poised to take the music scene by storm.
“The competition was intense. The atmosphere was nerve-wracking. As the defending champion, the pressure was overwhelming, but I pushed through. I want to extend my gratitude to the organisers for putting together such a refreshing and exceptional contest,” said DJ Irvinix.
He started disc-jockeying when he was 10-years-old after being inspired by his elder brother. DJ Irvinix said he started playing in night clubs when he was in Grade Seven alongside his elder brother, before his mother banned him.
He is now a full time disc jockey though he is currently not contacted to any local watering hole.
