LEVITICUS 25:8-13
And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years. [9] Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. [10] And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. [11] A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed. [12] For it is the jubile; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field. [13] In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession.
In Israel, God had put in place means by which a poor person who could not pay his debt and would have lost his inheritance to a rich man, could return to his inheritance.
If a person owed another person, the person owed would be allowed by law, to possess the property of the debtor and use it for a number of years.
If the poor man had a close relative who could pay off the debt on his behalf, the rich relative could redeem the property for his poor relative.
If the poor man did not have a close relative with money to redeem the property, he had to wait for the year of jubilee.
The poor man would also in the meantime be working for the rich creditor as a way of repaying the debt.
The year of jubilee came every 50 years. When the year arrived, a priest would go through every village with a trumpet which he would blow.
When the trumpet of jubilee was blown, it signified the end of slavery of the poor man and that he could now return to repossess his land.
He did not need to serve his master any more and had an immediate right to return to his inheritance and possession.
The rich man could no longer hold the property and use the poor man. The poor man had no money to pay for his own release from slavery and to redeem his land back. But the sounding of the trumpet spelt his release and right of return to his family and possession.
In Luke 4:18-19 the Bible says:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, [19] To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Jesus, our near kinsman, proclaimed the jubilee year. He called it the acceptable year of the Lord. He came to set the captives free.
We were in bondage of sin and shame. Jesus, our near kinsman, came and paid the price for us on the cross of Calvary. He redeemed our inheritance. On the cross, He cried: “It is finished”.
The price was paid. The sin question was settled on that day on Calvary. We were entitled, since that day to return to our relationship with God. We were set free to go back to our families. Praise God. We do not need to pay anything.
We do not need to work for the devil or do his bidding anymore. We are free since that day on Calvary.
In Romans 10:17, it is written that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. On hearing the Word, we can pluck courage to drop the hoe and look the taskmaster in the eye and say to him: “The trumpet of my liberty has sounded. I am no longer a slave to you.
‘‘I am not longer supposed to serve you. I am returning to my health. I am returning to my possessions. I am going back to my family.”
The preaching the Gospel is the sounding of the trumpet of your liberty. As you hear it or read this, you are hearing the trumpet of your liberation. You can leave your bad habits; you can denounce and renounce your sickness. You can speak your own destiny. You can return to your long-lost inheritance.
Satan cannot hold onto you blessing when you hear the sound of the Gospel trumpet.
Return. You do not have to pay anything. Your loved ones don’t have to pay anything. Jesus paid it all.
It is an act of God.
