TONGOGARA Settlement in Chipinge District has become a home away from home for more than 16 025 refugees from various countries, including Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, and others.
The camp, spanning 870 hectares, provides its inhabitants with necessary amenities and support to live decent lives.
Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister, Honourable Kazembe Kazembe expressed his gratitude after visiting the camp, saying Government’s goal is to provide supportive environment for refugees to rebuild their lives after experiencing conflicts in their home countries.
Minister Kazembe was accompanied by his deputy, Honourable Chido Sanyatwe and the Minister of State for Manicaland Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza.
Many refugees have made the camp their permanent home, starting families and losing hope of returning to their countries of origin.
Established in 1984, Tongogara Refugee Camp initially accommodated refugees from Mozambique fleeing the war between the government and the Mozambican National Resistance Movement (RENAMO). Today, it continues to provide shelter and support to refugees from diverse backgrounds.
