AN African proverb goes, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and for one Zimbabwean couple, that step has marked the beginning of an epic adventure motivated by the need to campaign for a VISA-free continent as well as inspire a tourism spirit within Africa.
Setting off from Nairobi, Kenya, the duo has embarked on a gruelling cycling journey to Bulawayo, a testament to their unwavering commitment to one another and also proof of their vow to stand by each other through life’s joys and challenges, in sickness and in health.
Theirs is a bond forged in the fire of devotion, strengthened by the promise to weather every storm together. As they pedal through the scorching savannah and rolling hills, their love will be the compass guiding them through the trials of the journey, a shining beacon illuminating the path to their ultimate destination.
With each rotation of the wheels, they will be drawing closer to the finish line, their hearts beating as one, a true embodiment of the timeless wisdom that “marriage is a journey, not a destination.”
The couple of Vusumuzi Mnkandla and Thando Tshuma officially kicked off season two of their cycling journey this past Wednesday.
In an interview with Sunday Life, the couple revealed the driving force behind their daring adventure.
“We’re not just cycling for the thrill of it but we want to explore our continent, learn different cultures and languages and also inspire our fellow Africans to travel within the continent,” Thando said.
With a shared passion for exploration, the duo is also using their cycling journey as a means to discover new things, forge unforgettable memories and test their physical and mental endurance.
Thando also stated that they are also campaigning for a VISA-free continent.
The daunting task ahead of the Zimbabwean couple is a staggering 5 000+ kilometres of rugged terrain, winding roads and unpredictable weather conditions.
With their sights firmly set on Bulawayo, the cycling couple revealed that they will be pedalling every day, driven by an unyielding determination to reach their destination. However, they are also aware that caution will be their best companion on this long journey.
To avoid injuries and setbacks, they will be adopting a strategic approach, carefully pacing themselves and listening to their bodies to ensure they can maintain the gruelling daily routine.
“We will only cycle 70 to 100 kilometres per day. We won’t exceed that,” said Thando.
The couple has adopted a self-sufficient approach to sustenance, carrying their own food supplies in specialised bags on their bicycles.
According to the duo, their daily culinary routine involves cooking their meals, unless they are fortunate enough to receive an invitation from fans or supporters for lunch.
“As night falls, we camp in the bush, relying on our portable camping gear to provide shelter from the elements,” said Thando.
This resourceful approach not only ensures their independence but also allows them to connect with nature and immerse themselves in the local culture. By being self-reliant, the couple can focus on their journey, taking in the breath-taking scenery and unforgettable experiences that Africa has to offer.
Self-reliance is key for the cycling couple, who have honed their mechanical skills to tackle any bicycle repairs that may arise during their journey.
The duo revealed that they’re equipped with the necessary tools and expertise to mend and fix their bicycles should they encounter any problems along the way.
“Vusi used to own bicycles when he was young, so he has the expertise to fix them when we face a breakdown,” said Thando.
While they are prepared to handle minor repairs themselves, they also know that sometimes it is better to seek the help of local experts. In such cases, they will readily hand over their bicycles to experienced fixers, ensuring that any issues are resolved quickly and efficiently.
By being resourceful and proactive, the couple aims to minimise downtime and stay on track, focusing on the thrill of their adventure rather than worrying about mechanical mishaps.
Financial constraints won’t be holding back the cycling couple as they embark on their epic journey from Nairobi to Bulawayo.
The couple revealed that they’re not seeking funding for lavish expenses, but rather just enough to cover their basic needs, such as food and other essentials, to sustain them along the way.
“We don’t need funds we just need money to survive,” said Thando.
Fortunately, they’ve managed to keep their costs remarkably low, thanks to their resourceful approach to accommodation and dining.
By opting to camp out in the bush and cooking their meals, they’ve significantly reduced their expenses, ensuring they have enough to see them through their adventure. As a result, the couple can focus on the thrill of their journey, rather than worrying about breaking the bank.
As they embark on their epic cycling journey they will have to dig deep into their physical and mental reserves to conquer the immense distance. Their adventure is a testament to their unwavering dedication and unrelenting passion for exploration.
