Music not for intellectually challenged — Sashakeys

Yolanda Mlilo, Sunday Life Reporter

AT just 18 years old, Sasha Kumalo, better known as “Sashakeys,” is making significant strides in the music industry.

Her musical journey began at the tender age of ten and has blossomed into a reputable brand while she simultaneously pursues her studies in Wildlife Management at Green Vision Trust College.

Sashakeys hails from Bulawayo’s Emakhandeni suburb and is a proud alumna of Emakhandeni High School, where she completed her secondary education with six O-level subjects debunking the mis-notion that the arts, particularly music, are for the intellectually ungifted.

“I began my musical journey when I was ten, and I recorded my first song while I was doing Form Two. Recently, I released a single that has become a hit. The song is titled Kwamanzi te,” Sasha shared in an interview with Sunday Life.

She said her highly anticipated new single is dedicated to all lovers.

“I’m excited to announce that my brand-new song will be released on Valentine’s Day, and it holds a special meaning for couples,” she said.

For her upcoming release, Sashakeys has collaborated with the talented Snowy Yuyue and the comedic Bhara.

“I have teamed up with Snowy Yuyue and the hilarious Bhara the comedian. I’ve been working hard to bring you another hit, and I’m thrilled to share it. Your constant requests for new music inspire me, it’s clear you enjoy my songs, and that’s all the motivation I need,” Sasha wrote to her fans.

On how she balances her studies with a demanding music career, Sasha emphasises the importance of education for young people. “I always make time for my studies and reserve my weekends for music. With an education, my future is more secure, whether I earn an average salary or not. If I don’t land a traditional job, I can still pursue music,” she said.

She underscored education as a crucial life tool, arguing that while music can be temporary, knowledge is lasting. “I’ve come to realise that education is indispensable. Being a celebrity is fantastic, but it doesn’t last forever. Knowledge and wisdom will truly take one far,” she said.

Given the challenges faced by musicians in the country, she emphasises that education remains her priority. “I’m focusing on my education right now. Music is a side hustle and you would appreciate that except for a few big names, it doesn’t pay that much. I’m not putting music on hold because I love it, but I want to ensure I’m set for life,” Sasha added.

Sasha encourages aspiring musicians to remain humble and true to themselves.

“I’m building a solid foundation for my future, and to those who look up to me, remember that what matters most is what you do when no one is watching. Stay humble, stay hungry for success and continue learning,” she advised.

She also urges new artistes to pursue education, noting that every discipline requires knowledge.

“Shining bright in music is just the beginning, but it’s what I do outside the spotlight that will define me.

Let’s prioritise our education, personal growth and character — that’s the real recipe for success.

Education is the foundation of all careers,” Sasha noted.

She advised upcoming artistes to be brave saying the cut-throat music industry presents many challenges, adding that what needed to be done was to clearly define goals and keep pushing them — to dream big and pursue the dreams without letting challenges weary the spirit.
