Rains expected to return soon: MSD

Sunday News Reporter

The Meteorological Services Department has announced that farmers should take advantage of the current dry spell to engage in essential farming activities, as normal to above-normal rainfall is anticipated from December through February.

Despite the forecast of a dry week ahead, farmers are encouraged to utilize this time effectively. The department warns, however, that the return of rains may bring along hailstorms and strong winds, necessitating caution.

Meteorologist Baba Maketa stated in an interview with ZBC News, โ€œOur seasonal outlook remains positive. From December to February, we expect normal to above-average rainfall. However, as the rains return, they may be accompanied by thunderstorms and heavy downpours, so the public should remain vigilant.โ€

Chief agronomist Ivan Craig emphasized the importance of this dry period for farmers. โ€œThis break is crucial; it allows farmers to focus on weeding, applying fertilizers, and for those who have not yet planted, this is an ideal time to do so,โ€ he explained.

As the country transitions from an El Niรฑo-induced drought to the La Niรฑa phenomenon, farmers are advised to adopt effective agronomic practices, including water harvesting techniques, to optimize their yields.
