Hundreds of mourners gathered to honour Faith Taruvinga, a cherished local fashion designer, during a heartfelt send-off yesterday at Glen Forest Cemetery.
Mourners who included celebrities, musicians, socialites, business leaders, diplomats, and fashion enthusiasts, united in celebrating her vibrant life and legacy.
Many expressed their shock and sorrow at the passing of Taruvinga, remembering her as a spirited individual who brought passion and creativity to everything she did.
Her death has been described as a profound loss to the nation, with friends and colleagues reflecting on the impact she made in the fashion industry and beyond.
Defence Minister and Zanu PF chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri praised Taruvinga as a dedicated worker who pursued her craft with unwavering passion.
“I am happy that her work has followed her, as seen by the many who have come to mourn.
‘Chihera’, you fought your own race and have brought us all together,” she said, emphasising the significant influence Taruvinga had on those around her.
Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri shared stories of Taruvinga’s ascent to prominence and her connections with influential figures across Zimbabwe.
“I watched her tireless dedication as she moved from point A to B. Eventually, she became part of Zanu PF, through (Cde Tendai) Chirau, collaborating on the Cheneso brand,” she reflected, highlighting Taruvinga’s remarkable journey in the fashion world and her ability to forge important relationships.
“She was always straight-forward and reliable. If I had a function, she would even write speeches for me and help dress me. She became like a mother to my children, offering guidance in their times of need,” said the Minister, illustrating the deep bond they shared.
Zanu PF Politburo member Tendai Chirau also expressed his grief over the loss saying that the nation had lost a true daughter of the soil.
“The news of Faith’s death is deeply shocking. She was integral to the House of Cheneso youth project I initiated. It’s heartbreaking to lose someone who treated me like her own son,” he lamented, underscoring the personal impact Taruvinga had on his life.
Taruvinga, affectionately known as “Amai Wadzie” or “Chihera” died on Sunday after a long illness at the age of 42.
She is survived by her daughter, Wadzanai “Wadzie,” who is expected to carry on her mother’s legacy.
Taruvinga collaborated with Chirau on the House of Cheneso brand, which sold Zanu PF regalia, wares and memorabilia.
She has worked with musicians like Alick Macheso and Tryson Chimbetu, showcasing her versatility and influence in the music and fashion industries.
In 2018, she represented Zimbabwe at the Taormina International Fashion Show in Italy, sharing the stage with renowned designers such as Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Versace, and Prada.
Additionally, Taruvinga partnered with Italian handbag maker Salvatore Montanucci and developed her own brand, MimiKay, specialising in designer clothing, footwear, and accessories. Her contributions to fashion and her dedication to empowering others have left an indelible mark on the industry.
As mourners reflected on her life, they were reminded of her spirit, creativity, and the connections she fostered.
Taruvinga will be remembered not only for her fashion contributions but also for the warmth and kindness she brought to everyone she met. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
